They must be better against the running game.

The Los Angeles Chargers won’t catch one break when it comes to the timetable of return for a Minnesota Vikings impact playmaker. Veteran running back Aaron Jones has been dealing with a hamstring injury, but his return to action could come quite soon. That’s tough news for the Chargers defense, who have a tall task ahead of them under the bright lights of primetime.

Chargers will face Vikings running backs Aaron Jones and Jordan Mason

Just hours before kickoff on Thursday Night Football, news broke regarding Vikings starting running back Aaron Jones. Jones has been on injured reserve, but that stint seems to be coming to an end. Minnesota is expected to activate Jones for the game against the Chargers.

Jordan Mason has been the starter for the Vikings while Jones is out, but the two-headed backfield can present some challenges tonight for LA. The Chargers have struggled in stopping the run in recent weeks and currently rank 19th in the NFL in rushing yards allowed per game (123.6).

Los Angeles needs to force Carson Wentz to beat them on TNF

The Vikings will want to establish the run under head coach Kevin O’Connell. With backup quarterback Carson Wentz set to start again, the Chargers need to sell out in stopping the ground game and force Wentz to make big-time throws while under duress. A week ago, Wentz threw two interceptions, one of which was returned for a touchdown.

The Bolts defense hasn’t found as much success in forcing giveaways recently, but this is a fantastic opportunity for Jesse Minter’s unit to get back on track. That being said, the defensive line and linebacker corps must be on the same page. Los Angeles needs more from LB Daiyan Henley who started the season on fire but has fizzled recently after dealing with both sickness and injury.

If the Chargers can slow down Jones and Mason, I like their chances of getting this home win in primetime. If not, Justin Herbert will have to pull out the heroics once again to give Jim Harbaugh’s squad any chance of winning.
