Broncos’ Sean Payton fires a shot at the Dallas Cowboys seconds after Week 8 win
Quite the response from Sean Payton after the team’s Week 8 win against the Dallas Cowboys.
The Denver Broncos started and ended the game red-hot against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 8, walking out of Mile High with a 44-24 win.
Quarterback Bo Nix and the offense were on fire throughout the contest, as the second-year signal-caller put the team on his back with over 240 passing yards and four total touchdowns.
Immediately after the win, head coach Sean Payton spoke to the media about the victory and what it meant for the organization. He took a few shots at the Cowboys organization after the beatdown on the gridiron, leaving nothing to the imagination.
Payton was asked about the Cowboys’ defense being last in the league and if it was something that Payton was thinking about heading into the matchup.
“We wanted to keep them last,” Payton said. “We recognized the injuries, there’s a lot of injuries, on our team and throughout the league. That was unimportant to us; we just went into the game focusing really on what we do well.”
Payton praises his team after the victory
Payton made sure to give the Broncos their flowers for what they were able to accomplish. The veteran head coach also brought up a pain point that he’s managed to fix in recent weeks. There’s always room for improvement in many aspects of the game.
“Obviously a good win,” Payton offered. “I thought we did a lot of things well, overcoming the first turnover in the first series. Defensively, held them to a field goal. Thought we defended them really well. And then offensively, I felt like we did a great job at the line of scrimmage, so our run numbers, our pass numbers, all of it was kind of lopsided.
“Proud of how we played coming off of last week’s win, those analytics are a pain when you look at them,” Payton continued. “I’m glad that we addressed them at the start of the week; it’s a mistake I made years ago, not talking about it. We just discussed it, and they did the same thing when we were discussing the road game before London, good win.”
When asked about legendary head coach Bill Parcells, Payton interjected before the question ended.
“It’s interesting, you come to the stadium and have your work week, and I didn’t know how the game would unfold,” Payton responded. “I love the fact that we took one of the top defenses in football against one of the best offenses, and we won, on that side of it. And then on the other side of it, it wasn’t close. I was proud of our defense.”
The head coach was discussing the ways to slow down one of the NFL’s best offenses in the league, highlighting that the game wasn’t particularly close and commending his players once again.
“Fair question, I thought, it’s hard to sack him, but I thought we affected him,” Payton said. “I thought we affected him; that was important. I thought our red zone defense forcing the very quick sudden change, forcing a field goal, those were important plays for us. And then, I just didn’t think they could keep up with what we were doing. I had said to the defense periodically, ‘Can you guys keep up with us?’ I thought it was a pretty one-sided game.”
Rounding out his press conference, of course, the topic of Nix came up. Payton kept his response short and sweet, sharing the same sentiment Broncos Country most likely had after watching the performance.
The head coach offered some insight into Nix’s interception while praising his performance.
“Look, his feet got away from him a little, but he bounced right back,” Payton said. “He was magnificent, he was outstanding.”
Payton’s message was loud and clear after the blowout: the Broncos aren’t backing down from anyone. His postgame comments served as one last shot at the Cowboys and a reminder that Denver’s confidence is growing with every win.
