Confidence on a football field might as well be a superpower for players and coaches. When you’re confident, you take more risks, you make more plays, and you move on to the next play or game without blinking.

But when you start questioning yourself, that’s when things start to go wrong. Hesitation, miscommunication, finger-pointing, emotions boiling over, it all becomes prevalent. That was on display for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense, with Pro Bowl LB Patrick Queen confirming that the Steelers may be dealing with those exact confidence issues right now.

Steelers lack urgency, confidence on defense right now

“I think from time to time, we’re human, you know, so that happens, but at the end of the day, you know, we got to pull each other back as as a brotherhood, as a family, and just try to battle back from these things,” said Queen when asked if the Steelers defense had lost confidence after the last two weeks. “You know, always keep your family close, always try to do the best you can to keep everybody locked in close to each other.”

In a perfect world, Queen would use his media training to say he is fully confident in his teammates and coaching staff, and that he believes Pittsburgh can turn things around. Instead, he gave the raw, unfiltered answer, which is commendable and concerning.

And it’s concerning because not one person in postgame interviews could put their finger on one thing going wrong. Everything from a lack of urgency to miscommunication to scheme to execution was mentioned as a problem by Mike Tomlin and his defensive leaders.

“I think we just got to understand situations, understand formations, and know what they’re about to do,” added Queen. “That’s the biggest thing, just us honing in on that detail and being better there. I think every time we’re third down, no matter what the distance is, we kind of fall short of that. So I think we’ve got to be better. Definitely think we got to be better at third down, for sure.”

To leave a game where you force no turnovers and don’t record a single sack when you have names like Watt, Highsmith, Heyward, Ramsey, Herbig, and others, feels like a travesty. One that, if not corrected soon, will send the Steelers on an early vacation.
