Tennessee Vols sophomore wide receiver Mike Matthews had a big game in UT’s 56-34 win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Matthews, a former five-star recruit, caught six passes for 107 yards and a touchdown in the win against Kentucky.

The Georgia native now has 35 receptions for 562 yards and three touchdowns through eight games this season.

Mike Matthews reveals what was said in the “trash talk” between himself and a Kentucky defensive back in the Vols’ win over Wildcats

At one point during Tennessee’s win against Kentucky, Matthews and a Wildcats defensive back exchanged a few words.

The interaction happened in the third quarter after Kentucky defensive back Nasir Addison was called for defensive holding on Matthews in the end zone.

Matthews appeared on the Food City Locker Room on Sunday and he was asked about the interaction with Addison.

“He started talking crazy,” said Matthews. “And I was like, ‘Bro, you were tackling me the whole time’. Then he started getting mad. I’m really more composed on the field. I don’t really talk as much as I used to.”

“We’re just composed,” added Matthews. “Of course, we’re going to talk if we need to. But as we’re going through the game, we’re just focused on what we’ve gotta do.”

Trash talk is always going to be part of football — especially when it comes to defensive backs and wide receivers. But it sounds like Tennessee’s wide receivers aren’t interested in spending time jawing with defenders — they’re simply focused on making plays.
