NASHVILLE — Rookie quarterback Cam Ward might be 1-7 to start the Tennessee Titans season, but that hasn’t stopped he and his teammates from staying involved. Ward and running back Tyjae Spears hosted a dodgeball tournament and obstacle course on Tuesday at KIPP Nashville College Prep Elementary.

There’s huge value in that kind of gesture and engagement from Ward in the community.

Titans need all the goodwill they can get

Ward and the other rookies are the only reason to watch the Titans this season.

This year’s No. 1 overall pick, the 23-year old passer is doing all he can to try and elevate a team in dire straits. Ward with fellow offensive rookies Elic Ayomanor, Chimere Dike and Gunnar Helm have done a lot of heavy lifting. At 1-7 with a point differential of -120, however, no one would blame Tennessee fans who stop showing up to games, or decide its not worth the get-in price.

That’s why its good to see Ward out participating in events like the team’s Take A Titan To School initiative.

The Titans desperately need to find someone fans can latch on to and identify with as this season continues to spiral. Ward’s on-field success is essential to the future of the franchise, and the only way to keep interest is wins. While Tennessee rebuilds towards more competitive years around him, making an appearance on an off day in the midst of each Sunday’s disappointments will go a long way with the next generation of fans.

“It’s important to me because I was once a little kid in their shoes trying to get to where I’m at,” Ward said. “In my area, we didn’t have a lot of kids to get this far. Just trying to have fun and show them that they can get there one day too.”

The Titans host the Los Angeles Chargers (5-3) in Week 9 on Sunday.
