Julian Sayin is rising in the Heisman Trophy race as the Ohio State Buckeyes keep rolling, and this week is a big opportunity for him. While the Buckeyes aren’t hosting a Penn State team that will be taken seriously after firing its coach and losing quarterback Drew Allar to injury, Sayin continues to post absurd numbers. Plus, he’s leading a team that is becoming a major favorite to win the national title again.
The first-year starter sits tied for second in the Heisman Trophy race, leading the country in completion percentage. Only a redshirt freshman, Sayin has 1,872 yards, 19 touchdowns, and three interceptions while averaging 10.86 adjusted yards per attempt. He’s looked even better.
On Wednesday, Ohio State team captain and third receiver Brandon Inniss revealed he thinks Sayin will win the Heisman Trophy. Here’s the key to Sayin’s Heisman argument.
Ohio State captain says Julian Sayin’s Heisman Trophy case is easy
The superb pocket passer has been a lot like former Ohio State quarterback and No. 2 overall pick, CJ Stroud. Sayin is an effortless passer who has a strong arm and can get the ball out at difficult launch angles. Inniss showed him a lot of love, calling him the best quarterback in the nation.
Here’s what Inniss raved about.
“Accuracy, his awareness. He’s very smart. He can throw any ball on the field. His command is way better than what it was. … I haven’t seen other quarterbacks manage a pocket like he has, stand in there and take a shot and throw a dot over the middle. … Who else is throwing 80% (completion percentage) in the country?”
The Heisman Trophy campaign recently began in Columbus as Sayin’s star gets brighter. The program recently had its general manager thank Nick Saban for retiring and essentially handing Sayin to them. Star receiver Carnell Tate also made his case for Sayin being the Heisman favorite.
“He’s the truth,” Tate said. “He’s a Heisman winner. There’s no ifs, ands or doubts about it. Each and every week, he shows us he’s a Heisman winner.”
The Buckeyes continue to roll and look almost unstoppable at this point. Their run game is the only area of concern, and head coach Ryan Day admitted as much. It may not matter with a historically good passing game and defense, but this is close to being a juggernaut team.
