Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin is carving out his own Heisman Trophy case and is tied for second in the odds as November arrives. The Buckeyes are streaking and appear to be the best team in the nation as they work toward repeating as National Champions. Teammate Jeremiah Smith has joined Sayin as a potential Heisman winner, though his odds have dropped lately.
Sayin joined fellow Ohio State star Caleb Downs on the Downs 2 Business podcast and gave his own take on the Heisman race. While no one expected Sayin to say himself, even if Downs said Sayin should win it, the Buckeyes’ quarterback did give a surprising candidate.
Sayin thinks his brief former teammate, Ty Simpson, should win the Heisman. Simpson is the odds-on favorite right now, and his explanation made sense. Here’s what he said.
Julian Sayin names Ty Simpson as his Heisman Trophy favorite
Sayin originally signed with Alabama as an early enrollee, so he was able to spend some time within the program before Nick Saban retired. Saban’s surprising announcement allowed Sayin to transfer, and the elite prospect quickly sought out Ohio State as a landing spot. In that time, though, he developed a friendship with Simpson and others.
“So when I visited Bama, I visited a few times, and Ty was always my host,” Sayin said when asked who his Heisman Trophy favorite was. “He’s a great dude. He’s a great player. I still text him today. So, I’m gonna go Ty. He’s having a great year.”
Only a redshirt freshman, Sayin has 1,872 yards, 19 touchdowns, and three interceptions while averaging 10.86 adjusted yards per attempt. Simpson is a redshirt junior but also a first-year starter. He’s at 2,184 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season.
Here’s what Simpson told Jim Rome recently, making it clear he wants a national title and the Heisman Trophy.
“Extremely blessed, right, Like, it would be a great opportunity. It’s super exciting,” Simpson said. “I wouldn’t be here if it wouldn’t for my teammates and everything they do. I think back to the reason why I came to Alabama and the championship hallway that we have, there’s only four Heisman Trophies, but there’s six National Championships in there. And so that’s what I really care about, just trying to win, trying to be the best guy I can be and make sure that I can do everything for my teammates that gets us win and gets to what we dream about for a long time and what our ultimate goal is.”
