Packers are exploring the trade market to potentially address their biggest roster need ahead of the NFL deadline
Trade rumors days before the deadline indicate that Green Bay could make a move if the right opportunity presents itself.
The Green Bay Packers might not be willing to give up too much draft capital after trading for edge defender Micah Parsons and offensive lineman Darian Kinnard in August. But that doesn’t mean general manager Brian Gutekunst is not exploring possibilities ahead of the deadline on Nov 4.
According to The Athletic’s NFL insider Dianna Russini, the Packers are making calls for cornerbacks around the league.
“The Colts need corners and have been calling. The Ravens and Packers are also looking for corners,” Russini wrote.
Multiple reports indicate the Packers want another corner
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler had mentioned the Packers as a potential landing spot for Roger McCreary before the Tennessee Titans traded him to the Los Angeles Rams for a Day 3 swap. Easton Butler, from the Packer Report, indicated that the team made preliminary calls for Denzel Ward, Avonte Taylor, and Cam Taylor-Britt.
Ultimately, everything will depend on the price tag. Gutekunst showed willingness to make a monster move when he acquired Parsons, but that was a unique opportunity.
“When you trade a high pick for a veteran player, you’re trading a young, really good contract for a player who’s proven, but probably expensive, so you’re giving up a pick and salary cap space,” Gutekunst said after last season. “You gotta weigh that. If it’s the right player, if you can feel he can be a dynamic player that can change your football team, you gotta consider that, because there’s not many of those guys out there. But you also have to understand what you’re giving up.”
Gutekunst took over as the Packers’ general manager in 2018, and so far, he’s never acquired a player at the deadline. Instead, he sold running back Ty Montgomery, safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, cornerback Rasul Douglas, and edge defender Preston Smith.
The Packers will explore every avenue, and adding a cornerback shouldn’t be ruled out. But it has to be the right opportunity, and it’s hard to find them at this point in the season.
