Oklahoma’s biggest play against Tennessee shouldn’t have counted, and the Vols have every right to be upset about it

In each of the Tennessee Vols’ last two losses, one devastating play essentially changed how the game was played.

A pick-six before halftime against the Alabama Crimson Tide, which resulted in a 14-point swing, doomed the Vols in Tuscaloosa.

In the Vols’ loss to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday night, a scoop-and-score play changed the way the game unfolded.

Oklahoma’s scoop and score against Tennessee shouldn’t have counted

There’s a lot that Tennessee didn’t do well on the play that led to the scoop and score. True freshman right tackle David Sanders Jr missed his assignment, which allowed a defender to come through free and deliver the hit on quarterback Joey Aguilar that forced the fumble.

There was also tight end Miles Kitselman’s failed tackle attempt on Oklahoma defensive lineman R Mason Thomas during the return.

All 11 players simply didn’t play winning football for the Vols on that play.

Oklahoma, however, had a player lined up in the neutral zone when the ball was snapped, which should’ve led to a flag (and would’ve nullified the fumble/touchdown).

You can see in the longer clip of the play that Thomas is clearly lined up in the neutral zone.

That’s a missed call by the officials. There’s no other way to put it. They missed it, and it cost the Vols. Instead of being first-and-5 at the Oklahoma 19-yard line with a chance to go up 14-0, the Sooners tied it up and completely changed the flow of the game.

Tennessee didn’t play well on Saturday night. There are a myriad of reasons why it lost the game. But you can’t help but wonder if the game would’ve played out differently had the Vols gone up 14-0 in that situation.
