The Green Bay Packers have the potential to be an offensive juggernaut, but it’s just the same aspects holding them back week after week: Penalties, mistakes, and sloppiness. That’s why, especially in the first halves of games, the unit has been so underwhelming.

The Packers have lost two games this season, and in both, the defense gave up fewer than 20 points. On Sunday, it was a 16-13 loss to the Carolina Panthers at Lambeau Field. After the game, quarterback Jordan Love offered a realistic statement about what the unit has done.

“I think it’s inconsistent,” Love said. “We’ve had games where we’ve played very well, put up a lot of points, and we’ve had games where we have not put up enough points. Those are games that you lose, so it’s just inconsistent. We’ve got to find ways to keep building on it, keep growing on the things we’re doing well, and clean up a lot of the mistakes.

“But turnovers, penalties, all those things that are just negative are what’s hurting us in some of these games where we’re not playing at the level we played at in other games. We’ve just got to find ways to be consistent and overcome those issues.”

The Packers have to find a way

Now, the Packers will be without tight end Tucker Kraft — most likely for the rest of the season. On Sunday, part of the problem was the lack of red zone efficiency against a defense that plays to avoid explosives. The interesting detail: The Packers face a similar scheme next week against the Philadelphia Eagles and Vic Fangio.

“It’s very frustrating,” Love added. “Everybody in the locker room is very frustrated. It’s tough, but the mindset walking out of that locker room is if we don’t play our best, we’re going to get beat just like that, no matter who it is. We’ve got to find ways to be at our best and be more consistent, put up more points than this. It’s definitely frustrating, but this is what happens if you don’t play your best week in and week out.”

Now, the Packers will have an extra day to prepare, since the Eagles game will be on “Monday Night Football.” And that’s what Green Bay wants to do to make it back to the win column.

“I mean, you just got to get back to it,” Love mentioned. “The most important thing is everybody staying together, staying with that mindset, finding ways to get better, learning from those stakes. This is the NFL. Each and every week, you’ve got to find ways to come back to work, stay together, and find ways to get better.”

The Packers are still in first place in the NFC North, despite the bad vibes. Next week, a big head-to-head matchup against the Eagles in the NFC race has the potential to turn everything around to the positive side once again.
