‘He’s got a chance to be a star’ – ESPN’s Greg McElroy liked what he saw from a key Tennessee Vols player against Oklahoma
Tennessee Vols redshirt freshman wide receiver Braylon Staley had a big game against the Oklahoma Sooners.
ESPN’s Greg McElroy liked what he saw from Tennessee Vols redshirt freshman Braylon Staley on Saturday against the Oklahoma Sooners.
Staley caught five passes for 75 yards and two touchdowns in the Vols’ 33-27 loss to the Sooners.
One of Staley’s touchdowns came on a short pass where the young wide receiver broke a couple of tackles while taking the ball 54 yards to the end zone.
“Braylon Staley, that guy is a dude,” said McElroy. “He can play. I mean, he can really, really play. Hopefully he continues to build on that performance. He got banged up a little bit in the process, too. I haven’t seen any updates about what it was or if it could be long term, but I really like what that young man showed me. He’s got a chance to be a star.”
Staley said after the game that he’s “good” and “ready to roll”.
Greg McElroy wasn’t as kind to Vols QB Joey Aguilar
McElroy wasn’t quite as kind to Vols quarterback Joey Aguilar while reviewing Tennessee’s loss to Oklahoma.
The former Alabama quarterback specifically took issue with a ball that Aguilar threw into double coverage that resulted in an interception.
“The interception there that he threw a little bit deeper, it was intercepted around the goal line,” said McElroy. “That was a bad decision, man. You’re just trying to do too much. And then you give Oklahoma three points right before the half [because] you throw the pick…I just don’t know what he was thinking on that throw. It’s just a bad decision. And because of these turnovers, even though Oklahoma was outplayed there in the first half, they were able to turn those turnovers into some points.”
It was certainly a bad decision. Aguilar did some good things against the Sooners, but it wasn’t his best game in a Tennessee uniform. He’ll need to be better in a few weeks when the Vols travel to Gainesville if Tennessee is going to have a chance to get their first road win against Florida since 2003.
