There was a lot of buzz heading into the NFL’s trade deadline and it’s certainly lived up to the hype after the New York Jets traded All-Pro cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts.

Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets will receive the Colts’ first-round picks in 2026 and 2027. NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero later added Colts wide receiver Adonai Mitchell is also included in the trade.

Not long after the move, Gardner set the Jets and their fans one last message via X:

Trading Sauce Gardner is a major surprise that not many saw coming

The Jets literally just signed Gardner to a four-year, $120.4 million extension back in July. It looked like he was going to be a part of the new regime’s long-term plans, but that’s clearly not the case after Tuesday’s news.

It’s clear Darren Mougy and Aaron Glenn are completely re-tooling this roster and building it in their vision, at this point. They need all the capital they can get to make that happen and now, they have two first-rounders to work with in both the 2026 and 2027 NFL Draft. Granted, the Colts’ former pick looks like it’ll be more toward the back end of the first round, but you never know. The bottom could fall out or they could suffer an early playoff exit that bumps up the value.

Either way, one of the best players on the team is gone and the eye is clearly on the future. We’ll see if anymore moves happen before the 4 p.m. ET deadline.
