The Lions could be in trouble with the Commanders having Frankie Luvu back, but not necessarily because of his play

Gotta watch out for that hip drop tackle.

The Detroit Lions will take on the Washington Commanders on the road this Sunday, and one player who was originally not supposed to play for Washington actually will.

Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu successfully appealed his suspension and will play Sunday against the Lions

Normally, I’m not the guy who’s a nerd about dangerous players or whatever. I won’t be as obsessed as Vikings fans are about Kerby Joseph. But the fact is, Frankie Luvu has a problem. He really likes to perform the hip drop tackle, which the league banned last year due to the excessive number of players getting hurt by it.

Luvu has been fined three times this year, and he was suspended for this game due to the last one. Then, he got it appealed. This issue isn’t going away, and players are taking advantage of the fact that it doesn’t get called because it has to be “clear and obvious.” So what happens when Luvu has a clear and obvious one against the Lions and someone gets hurt badly?

By the way, he did have one against the Lions in the Divisional round last January, and he also got fined for that big illegal hit on Jared Goff, which sent Goff into concussion protocol. Luckily, he was cleared shortly after.

In terms of what he brings to the Commanders’ defense outside of that, we talked with our Commanders beat writer, Josh Taylor, and it sounds like Luvu isn’t having his best season.

“Frankie Luvu has had a stepback season compared to last year, but he’s honestly been moved around a lot with the defense struggling and all of the injuries adding up. He’s been used more as an outside linebacker off the edge ever since Dorance Armstrong went down for the season. Luvu isn’t the best in coverage, but he’s great at reading and reacting to plays in the backfield.” – Josh Taylor, A to Z Sports Washington.

We’ll see how things go on Sunday, but you have to hope that everyone on both teams walks out without any injuries, especially since both teams are being hit hard with them.
