The Jacksonville Jaguars may have gotten one of the best trades possible at the trade deadline. Sure, some will say they overpaid for Jakobi Meyers, the former Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver. They gave up a fourth-rounder and a sixth-rounder for a guy on an expiring contract.

That’s not ideal, but if that’s what it took to get a guy that they believe can help them win now, and they think they can re-sign, then so be it. Meyers is the real deal, a guy who does all the things the Jaguars need. He hasn’t even played a game yet, and defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile, who will be dealing with him a ton in practice, can’t stop talking about how good Meyers is.

Jaguars DC Anthony Campanile respects Jakobi Meyers’ game a ton

“So, it’s funny, I was talking to him yesterday. When I was in Miami, we played him like twice a year when he was in New England. I’m like, ‘This guy is a total pain in the ass.’ He just catches everything, and he blocks everybody. Like, he would go in there and you’ve got guys, like in 11-personnel, the Z receiver’s usually getting in there and MDMing [blocking] the safety, and he’d go in there like a damn fullback. So, I always had a lot of respect for him as a player and coached against him in college, too, actually,” Campanile told reporters Thursday.

“But he’s really—when you look at receivers, you value guys like that so much. They go make contested catches, and he’s tough. I always felt like he was a hard guy to defend when we were in Miami because there could be two guys at the point of attack, and he really attacked the football and went up in the air for the ball a lot of times. I remember he made a couple of sick catches against us that I’m definitely over by now [laughs]. But yeah, I’m happy to have him here, man. He is an awesome dude, too.”

That sounds like a guy who is happy he doesn’t have to gameplan against him anymore. Last Sunday, Campanile was gameplanning against Meyers, trying to figure out ways to stop him and the Raiders’ offense. They didn’t stop Brock Bowers, but they did show Meyers a little bit of what they can do for him on both sides of the ball, and what LV couldn’t do for him.

Meyers will fit in great with the Jaguars because his best trait is what the Jaguars are the worst at. Jacksonville leads the league in drops, and Meyers had no drops last season and one of the lowest drop rates in the league. His impact may not immediately show in a big way on Sunday against the Houston Texans, but you better believe he will be an impactful player in 2025.
