Dan Campbell talks about taking over the Lions’ offense and John Morton’s future with the team
Where does it go from here for the Lions?
The Detroit Lions got back on track with a 44-22 win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday, but somehow, that’s not the biggest story coming out of that game.
The biggest story is that Lions head coach Dan Campbell took over offensive play-calling. I don’t know about you, but things were definitely different this time around. A team that has struggled to put points on the board suddenly looked like the dominant offense we’re used to seeing.
So now the big question is what’s next? Is this what’s going to happen going forward, like in 2021, or was this just a one-time thing?
Dan Campbell answers whether or not he’s calling the Lions offense from now on
“Yeah, you know, it was just, let’s try something a little different, right?” Campbell said. “I know what I want to do. I know I want to do it now. That being said, it’s just a collaborative effort. I mean, I was taking input from (Lions offensive coordinator) John Morton and the other coaches. ‘So what do you think here? You’re third down?’ This is all encompassing, and we all work together. Coaches did a hell of a job, but I just wanted to change it up a little bit, you know, let’s just see if, if you know, maybe a different play caller can get us a little rhythm. That’s all, and it honestly it’s nothing more than that. You know, you’re probably gonna want to ask questions about ‘what’s about this?’ or ‘I heard this.’ It’s not that. We made a change. It was good for today.”
So, a few questions get answered there. This is not the end for Morton in Detroit. Campbell firmly saying that they just wanted to make a little change on Sunday, and that was it, should probably nail home that Morton isn’t going anywhere.
It also suggested that this might not have been your full takeover, as we saw in 2021. Campbell said multiple times that this was a collaborative effort on Sunday and even mentioned earlier in the week that he offense would be a collaborative effort.
As for who is calling plays against the Eagles next Sunday, that question is up in the air. We may receive more information on that as the week progresses. But if I were Detroit, I’d just do this again. The Lions’ offense looked recharged and looked like itself again.
