Making moves (or not) at the trade deadline is always a conversation that starts once it passes. For the New Orleans Saints, a recent report about their interest in trading Alontae Taylor got even more notable after his dominance against the Carolina Panthers in Week 10. He helped the Saints earn their second win of the campaign so far.

Alontae Taylor impresses in Week 10 win following trade speculation

With New Orleans’ defense on the field, Alontae Taylor was arguably the best player on the football field in Week 10. Taylor intercepted Panthers QB Bryce Young in the second half, further spurring momentum in favor of New Orleans. He also made multiple tackles in the run game to prevent chunk gains for the Panthers. He finished the game with four tackles and played stick coverage all day long.

NFL insider Ian Rapoport confirmed that the Saints and Bears were discussing a trade to send Taylor to Chicago. Ultimately, it did not occur and the DB remains in black and gold.

“Before the Colts stuck their mega deal for Gardner, they had discussions centered around Saints cornerback Alontae Taylor, who drew real interest on Monday and Tuesday. In fact, sources say the Bears were deep in talks for Taylor before a deal ended up falling through. Taylor, who is in a contract year and likely will get paid this offseason, spent time with Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen when he was head coach in New Orleans and the fit made sense. Alas, the Bears ended up dealing with the Browns for pass rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.” — Ian Rapoport

This choice by the Saints was a bit confusing, considering Taylor is in the final year of his contract. If he doesn’t get extended, he will hit the open market this offseason in all likelihood. However, this sort of performance like Taylor had against the Panthers could be an eye opener.

When he is firing on all cylinders, he is a dynamic playmaker on the back end, and DC Brandon Staley has also shown interest in using Taylor to blitz at times as well. He has had success in that area before and has found comfort in the slot for coverage. In week 10, it was melting pot of success for him.

The Saints look fairly smart for keeping him around following this week, but it remains to be seen what his long-term future with the team looks like. New Orleans did discuss a new deal for him this offseason, but nothing came to fruition between the two sides.
