On Sunday, the Detroit Lions had a big 44-point explosion against the Washington Commanders. This came after a big switch on offense, where Lions head coach Dan Campbell took over offensive play calling from offensive coordinator John Morton. Now the question is, will he continue that?

Dan Campbell will continue to call the Lions offense, at least for now

This is the way to go for Campbell and the Lions. You’re seeing some of the best coaches in the league doing this right now. Andy Reid is calling the offense for the Kansas City Chiefs, Sean McVay is doing it for the Los Angeles Rams, and Kyle Shanahan is doing it for the San Francisco 49ers. All of those teams consistently have a very good offense, and it’s because the man in charge gets to put forth his vision himself.

When asked if Campbell wanted to continue that trend, he sort of danced around the subject and ended it by saying he just wants to help the team. Maybe this is just something where Campbell is just taking over for a little bit and plans to give Morton the play sheet back. He likened the situation to where he was with Ben Johnson early that run together.

“Look, don’t forget Ben (Johnson)-I called whatever that was eight or nine games. I don’t remember what it was in 2021 while he helped me, but he watched, he learned, you know, he saw how I wanted to run it, what I was looking for, and then it evolved from there. He took it; he knew exactly what I wanted. And, you know, by the middle of 2022 I didn’t have to say a word. That’s kind of where John (Morton) is. It’s good. And, you know, sometimes that’s the best way to really know what’s what is just going through that.”

Campbell is certainly alluding to the idea that the Lions are going to give the sheet back to Morton at some point if he’s able to sit back a learn for a bit. When asked if Morton would maybe be calling the plays again next year, Campbell said, “Who knows? Maybe sooner.” So it’s a possibility.

With that said, if the Lions go to Philadelphia on Sunday night and drop a 40 burger again, I really don’t know how the Lions could go back to what they were doing. That’s why you have to wonder if Campbell plans to just hold onto things the rest of the way. If he does, he’ll be in good company.
