The Dolphins may have unexpectedly uncovered a long-term solution at one of their most concerning spots during their breakthrough Week 10 win over Buffalo

And that, my friends, is why you churn the roster and let the young guys play.

One of the biggest surprises of the Miami DolphinsWeek 10 contest against the Buffalo Bills was just how well the secondary held up against Bills quarterback Josh Allen and the Buffalo passing game.

It has been well documented that Allen has enjoyed monster production against Miami throughout the course of his entire career — it’s been dominant showing after dominant showing.

But Miami, without veteran cornerbacks Kader Kohou (out for the season) and Rasul Douglas (toe injury), forced Allen to work for every yard, while limiting them to 13 points. One of the key performers in that effort should be a source of optimism for the Dolphins moving forward, too.

Former top-50 draft choice JuJu Brents was outstanding in his first start with the Dolphins.

The Dolphins claimed Brents off the waiver wire at the start of the 2025 regular season. Brents did not survive the Colts’ 53-man roster cutdown and was given the first half of the season to acclimate to the Dolphins and assimilate into the team’s defensive scheme. As injuries piled up, it created an opportunity for Brents to start against the Bills on Sunday.

Prior to Week 10, Brents had logged just nine defensive snaps through the first nine weeks.

Boy, will it be hard for the Dolphins to take him off the field after this performance. Brents was targeted five times in Week 10. He conceded just 12 passing yards on those five targets — yielding a passer rating allowed of 47.9 while also logging a pass defensed at the catch point.

He tackled well, posting five tackles against the Bills. That includes several in-space challenges that required good discipline and usage of his elite length to wrap up the ball carrier.

Miami Dolphins cornerback JuJu Brents

  • Drafted 45th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft by the Indianapolis Colts (Kansas State)
  • Logged 497 defensive snaps as a rookie
  • Played just 68 snaps defensively as a second-year player due to a knee injury
  • Claimed off waivers by the Dolphins on Aug. 27, 2025

As a third-year player whom Miami claimed, Brents isn’t just a feel-good story for the back half of what has been a challenging season. He’s under contract with the Dolphins in 2026, which will be the fourth and final season of his rookie contract. The Dolphins have potential here in the form of a former top-50 pick to find a short-term boost and a long-term solution.

And that’s what Miami must now reconcile. Brents just posted as good a single-game performance as the Dolphins have seen all season in coverage. He’s 25 with rare physical tools, and he’s got a chance to be on the roster next season without needing any attention on his contract.

Contrast that to a 30-year-old veteran in Douglas and Jack Jones, who turns 28 in December. Both signed one-year contracts with the Dolphins in August.

Brent’s play was not just a fun breakout game for a talented player who hadn’t necessarily gotten the time he needed in Indianapolis. It should be the catalyst for an expanded opportunity and a potentially successful gem from in-season roster churning.

All eyes now turn to Week 11 against the Commanders. Will Brents stay in the lineup? He probably should.
