It’s been quite the bounce-back year for the Tennessee Vols’ offense in 2025. After slogging through an often-frustrating offensive performance last year and being carried at times by a top-notch defense, Tennessee’s offense has returned to being one of the best and most exciting units in the country.

A significant reason is the emergence of a trio of talented and explosive wide receivers that Joey Aguilar has pushed the ball down the field toward. While Chris Brazzell II has garnered a lot of attention, and very deservedly so, another wide receiver has quietly made a big name for himself as arguably the best freshman in the country, Braylon Staley.

According to the university’s strategic communications department, Staley leads all freshman wide receivers in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns and is second in catches.

Tennessee WR Braylon Staley is at or near the top in all major freshman receiving categories

Staley, a redshirt freshman, was a big pickup for Josh Heupel when he committed to become a part of Tennessee’s 2024 class back in June 2023. Despite a late push from his hometown South Carolina Gamecocks to get him to stay, he signed with Tennessee on early signing day in December. He appeared in four games in 2024 and thus maintained his ability to take a redshirt for the season. Against Ohio State in the College Football Playoff, he had two catches for 11 yards.

Staley wasn’t a name that was talked about a great deal by pundits after Tennessee saw seven receivers depart in the offseason through the portal, the NFL Draft, and eligibility expiration, with Mike Matthews getting most of the attention. But Staley has shown that he deserves a lot more attention, as he’s as good as any freshman pass catcher in the country and perhaps any freshman regardless of position.

He’s been Tennessee’s primary slot receiver this season, having handled 449 of his 536 reps in the slot, per Pro Football Focus, and it’s been a spot where he’s thrived. The most encouraging thing for Staley is he’s stepped up his game in SEC play.

He went over 100 receiving yards against Arkansas (6 catches, 109 yards) and Kentucky (6 for 105) and was the Vols’ most productive receiver against Alabama (10 catches for 92 yards and a touchdown) and Oklahoma (5 catches, 75 yards, 2 touchdowns).

The future is bright for Staley in Knoxville, and it’s time that more people start talking about the top-end player he appears destined to become for the Big Orange.
