The Oklahoma Sooners are feeling good about themselves after a critical win over the Tennessee Volunteers two weeks ago. Now with another massive game against the Alabama Crimson Tide ahead of them, the Sooners are thinking all about the playoffs and their chances to make the College Football Playoffs for the first time under head coach Brent Venables.

The simplest solution, of course, is to simply win. Win, and the Sooners are almost sure to be in. Lose, and their hopes take quite a dip. However, the Sooners can salvage that with some chaos across the country and in the SEC to help boost their chances of making it in.

Which teams should Oklahoma fans be rooting for this weekend to help secure their first College Football Playoff bid in years?

#5 Georgia OVER #10 Texas

There’s been some debate over who Oklahoma should root for this week, as a strong Texas and Ole Miss (and potentially Alabama) gives the Sooners very-high quality losses, but Texas being in the picture significantly muddies the potential for Oklahoma to make it in. There would be too many SEC teams at the top, and Texas’s head-to-head win over the Sooners would likely give them the edge here.

If Georgia and Texas A&M can take down the Longhorns to end the season, a 4-loss Texas isn’t making it in over the Sooners if they can go 2-1 at worst over their final three games. Plus, what Sooner isn’t going to enjoy rooting against Texas?

#22 Pitt OVER #9 Notre Dame

While helping the ACC teams look stronger isn’t necessarily great for Oklahoma, this one would have the benefit of knocking Notre Dame out of the playoff picture, freeing up an at-large bid for the Sooners to potentially sneak into, even with three losses. Three losses with a stronger schedule and resume are easily better than Notre Dame’s resume at that point, particularly if the Big Ten removes USC from the picture as well.

#21 Iowa OVER #17 USC

Speaking of the Big Ten taking themselves out of the picture, Iowa knocking down USC this week would be another excellent outcome for the Sooners. Being able to dunk on Lincoln Riley aside, that would assuredly eliminate another Big Ten team from taking an at-large bid, freeing the pathway for the Sooners to get a spot even with a third loss.

TCU OVER #12 BYU

The Sooners have to turn their hopes to a former and familiar Big 12 foe in rooting for TCU this weekend to take down BYU. Much like Notre Dame and USC, a BYU loss would completely eliminate them from the CFP picture, in my opinion. They don’t have the quality resume or schedule to survive a second loss in the regular season. BYU going down would keep Oklahoma’s bid for an at-large spot open, and remove a critical competitor for one of those spots.
