The Commanders will be finding out if they have needed roster win with recent free agent signing returning
A recent free agent signing coould soon make his debut for the Commanders.
The Washington Commanders are looking to get a win anywhere they can with a 3-7 record, and they could have one on the roster soon.
We’ve already seen a handful of newer additions having to play due to injuries, and wide receiver Treylon Burks showed some flashes against the Detroit Lions. There was another younger addition that has a ton of upside that the Commanders signed weeks ago, and we could finally see him soon.
The Commanders’ defense needs help now and in the future, and hopefully, defensive end Drake Jackson could be the guy with him returning to practice.
Commanders open 21-day window for Drake Jackson
The Commanders signed Jackson a month ago after he made visits to several teams, but then they placed him on IR to continue his rehab on his knee injury. We haven’t heard any updates on Jackson or if he will play this season, but the Commanders just opened up his 21-day window, meaning he could be playing after the bye week next week.
The Commanders need more young players on the roster to contribute, and the defense will need an overhaul this offseason. Jackson could be a major steal for the roster with the Commanders lacking draft capital in the 2026 NFL draft. He’s always had the talent to be a force in the run game and as a pass rusher, but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Jackson is only 24 years old and could at least be a really good rotational option next season while the Commanders continue to address the defensive line in the draft or free agency.
He could also help out now and show some tape on what he’s capable of doing next season, because the pass rush has been non-existent since Dorance Armstrong suffered a season-ending injury.
The Commanders need to find a pass rush
Armstrong was one of the top pressure rate defenders and sack leaders in the league before he suffered a knee injury against the Dallas Cowboys that knocked him out for the season. The Commanders have had to adjust and play more of Jacob Martin and Preston Smith on the edge, while moving Frankie Luvu to the outside more than usual. It hasn’t gone well, though, and the pass rush rate has dropped drastically.
The pass rush was the only strength of the struggling defense, and without it, the team has suffered four straight 21+ point losses. It reached rock bottom, and head coach Dan Quinn had to demote Joe Whitt Jr. and take over as defensive coordinator. Jackson could provide a needed boost for the rest of the season, while showing what he can do as a future piece of the roster as well.
