Dan Campbell and the Detroit Lions made a bit of a splash in Week 10 when Campbell took over the offensive play-calling from offensive coordinator John Morton. As we know, Campbell plans to call the plays in Week 11 against the Philadelphia Eagles, but the question about whether he’d give the play sheet back to Morton this season has remained, and Campbell hasn’t exactly been forthcoming about it.

When he was asked, after the win over the Washington Commanders, if Morton could call plays again next season, Campbell said, “Yeah, or who knows? Maybe sooner. We’ll see.” Well, now we have our answer as far as the rest of the season goes.

Lions head coach Dan Campbell told Fox’s Jay Glazer he will be the permanent play-caller for the rest of the season

So there you go. Morton will not be getting another shot to call plays this year. As for what Morton’s future is beyond 2025, that’s a question we won’t know the answer to for some time. You may remember that the last time Campbell took over play-calling was in 2021, when he took over for Anthony Lynn.

The two parties parted ways once the season ended. There does seem to be a better bond between Campbell and Morton than there was between Campbell and Lynn, so perhaps they can persuade him to stay.

We’ll see what happens, but we do know that Morton has been gracious about the whole thing. If the Lions decide to move on, we’ve already identified five good candidates to take the OC role in 2026.
