Ja’Marr Chase’s words may come back to bite him after new video of fight with Jalen Ramsey emerges
Chase denied the accusation of spitting on Jalen Ramsey following Cincinnati’s loss in Pittsburgh.
Jalen Ramsey alleges Ja’Marr Chase spat on him during the Cincinnati Bengals’ 34-12 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Chase has denied the accusation, but his denial has now been countered by new video evidence.
FOX 19’s Austin Briski posted a new angle of the altercation, showing spit leaving Chase’s mouth toward Ramsey a second before Ramsey grabbed and struck him.
Any evidence the NFL can find will be used to evaluate if punishment for either party will be handed out. If the league deems this video as clear evidence against Chase, then Chase could be in trouble.
Ja’Marr Chase could be facing suspension for spitting on Jalen Ramsey
Unsportsmanlike conduct penalties often lead to fines the following week. In Chase’s case, a suspension could be the result of his actions.
Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, an NFL spokesperson confirmed the league will review Chase and Ramsey’s altercation.
What may be working against Chase is a precedent set from earlier this season. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was ejected for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during Philly’s Week 1 game. Carter hadn’t even played a down in the game, so the league determined him missing all of it served as the equivalent of a one-game suspension.
Chase was not ejected for his actions in the altercation with Ramsey, so he would not be free from a future suspension. A one-game punishment could very well be in the cards for Chase.
Following the game, referee Bill Vinovich confirmed to Post-Gazette Sports’ Brian Batko that none of the officials saw Chase spit on Ramsey.
“No, obviously we did not,” Vinovich said. “We did not see anything that rose to that level at all.”
If Carter got ejected for getting caught spitting on Prescott, the same would’ve happened to Chase. It’s now in the league’s hands as to whether or not the 25-year-old will receive equal punishment for the same action.
Cincinnati plays the New England Patriots next Sunday. Expect a decision to be reached before then.
