The wear and tear of the college football season is beginning to catch up with the Ohio State Buckeyes, and we’ve seen that over the last couple of weeks.

Ohio State WR Carnell Tate has missed the last two games with an undisclosed injury that isn’t expected to be serious. Meanwhile, star WR Jeremiah Smith was questionable to play against UCLA this past weekend and ended up playing just over a quarter. Smith was impactful during his limited time on the field, but he left the game limping, raising concerns about his status.

Ryan Day is keeping injury details close to the vest with Jeremiah Smith and Carnell Tate

“I can tell you they are in great spirits,” Day said on Tuesday. “The medical staff is working hard. We’ll take it day to day and see how they come in each day, but they’re working hard to get back on the field.”

Ohio State has always been secretive with injuries under Day, and that won’t change with these two. The belief is that the Buckeyes are being cautious and may even decide to sit both players on Saturday against Rutgers. The Buckeyes are 10-0 and still have everything in front of them. A serious injury to Tate or Smith would be a major blow that could prove detrimental to the offense.

Smith leads the Buckeyes with 902 receiving yards and nine touchdowns in 10 games. Tate has 711 receiving yards and seven touchdowns in nine games. The junior from Chicago is expected to be a first-round pick next April, and Smith is projected to go very early in the draft when 2027 rolls around.

Both are vital to what the Buckeyes want to do offensively with QB Julian Sayin. While there are no specifics about either injury, Day’s update suggests they are minor. Ensuring both players are available for the game against Michigan should be the priority — not this Saturday against Rutgers.
