The Dallas Cowboys have been active traders this calendar year. It started in March with a couple of former first-round picks added to the roster in CB Kaiir Elam and LB Kenneth Murray. Later, WR George Pickens was added in a blockbuster move. They weren’t done.

The Cowboys dealt away superstar defender Micah Parsons for multiple first-round picks one week before the regular season, only to turn around in November and acquire All-Pro DT Quinnen Williams.

They’ve been busy. And results have been varied. On Saturday, the Cowboys confirmed a growing suspicion about one of them: The Elam experiment didn’t work out, and his time in Dallas has come to an end.

Cowboys waiving Elam confirms suspicion about his time being up

The Cowboys waived Elam on Saturday ahead of their Week 12 matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Suspicions about Elam’s end of the road in Dallas began to arise last Monday night during the Cowboys’ win over the Las Vegas Raiders. In it, Elam finished with zero defensive snaps. He had averaged an 85% snap count in the previous three games. It felt like with Caelen Carson and Shavon Revel Jr. healthy, DC Matt Eberflus was ready to move on.

Elam arrived in Dallas with the hopes of a new scheme and environment reinvigorating his career. In Buffalo, he was considered a draft bust. The Bills publicly admitted it was on them and their scheme that Elam hadn’t lived up to the expectations of a first-round pick. But with the Cowboys, Elam never fit, either. He struggled in zone coverage and man coverage all the same. Carson and Revel Jr. looked significantly better.

Elam’s fate is particularly disappointing given his strong training camp, which turned heads and raised confidence in the Cowboys’ worrying cornerback position.

Fortunately for Dallas, Carson and Revel Jr. had very strong defensive outings on Monday against the Raiders. They looked like upgrades over Elam from the start.

Elam’s roster spot was used to promote RB Malik Davis from the practice squad, marking the second time this season Davis has been signed to the 53-man roster. He has backed up Javonte Williams in recent weeks while fifth-round rookie Jaydon Blue has been a healthy scratch in that time.
