The Bucs had injury added to insult – or an insulting loss, at least – on Sunday night on national television, losing 34-7 to the Los Angeles Rams in a battle of NFC division leaders.

The Bucs were blown off the field in the first half, trailing 31-7 with just seconds remaining in the first half. It was at that point where things went from bad to much worse for Tampa Bay.

Baker Mayfield was shown wincing and holding his left non-throwing shoulder earlier in the half after throwing a touchdown pass to Tez Johnson. However, he stayed in the game, and on the half’s final play, he heaved a long pass downfield incomplete, and at that point, his reaction said it all as far as whether he could continue.

After the game, Todd Bowles explained what specific injury that Mayfield is dealing with.

Todd Bowles says Baker Mayfield is dealing with a left shoulder sprain

“Right now, he has a shoulder sprain,” Bowles said. “He’ll get an MRI tomorrow.”

Mayfield was seen on the sideline in a sling as the teams took the field in the second half and was ruled out for the rest of the game, which, given the score, was the no brainer of a decision. One has to wonder if having your clearly hurting quarterback not throw a Hail Mary from inside his own 40-yard line down 24 points also should have been a no brainer.

As to whether that Hail Mary aggravated the injury, Bowles indicated that he did.

“I thought he hurt it earlier. He said he was fine. He went back, and he re-aggravated it on the last play.”

Teddy Bridgewater came in and spelled Mayfield, going 8/15 for 62 yards and getting sacked twice, the same number as Baker.

Now, we’ll wait to hear what the MRI shows and see if it’s mild – something he can bounce back from relatively in a week or two – or if the Bucs could be starting a crucial stretch of their schedule with their most important player watching from the sideline.
