Every fan of the Tennessee Titans has been privy to the unlikely story of quarterback Cam Ward at this point. From a Wing-T high school quarterback with a single FCS offer to the first overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the story has been a great example of perseverance and development. Ward always had the talent, but it needed someone to believe in it.

The coach who originally took a chance on Ward was former Incarnate Word head coach Eric Morris. Considered a bit of a quarterback whisperer and offensive guru, Morris quickly helped Ward become one of the best quarterbacks we had seen on the FCS level in recent memory. In 19 games together at Incarnate Word, Ward managed to throw for 6,908 passing yards and 71 touchdowns. He added another three scores on the ground.

Both Ward and Morris parlayed that success into an FBS opportunity. They each ended up with Washington State, where Ward would spend two seasons, but Morris bolted after the 2022 college football season as the offensive coordinator and quarterback coach to take the head coaching job with North Texas. Everyone knows the next stage of Ward’s story – becoming a record-setting signal caller with the Miami Hurricanes in 2024.

Perhaps some didn’t keep up with the ascension of Morris. The former Texas Tech standout wide receiver took over a Mean Green program in a tough spot. In three years with the team, Morris would accumulate a 21-15 overall record.

Morris’s finest season, however, has come this fall. North Texas currently holds a 10-1 overall record, including the No. 21 overall ranking in the country. They are led by quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who is a big part of the top-scoring offense in the country that is averaging a staggering 46.3 points per game. Despite there being a chance at a College Football Playoff berth, Morris has decided to take on the next step of his coaching career.

Next opportunity for Eric Morris

It was announced on Tuesday that Morris was being hired by Oklahoma State to be the team’s next head coach. He will be just the second head coach for the program in the last 20-plus years. The program parted ways with legendary coach Mike Gundy a few weeks ago. Gundy had done some incredible things while leading the program, finishing his career with a 170-90 overall record. He will not be an easy coach to replace.

One thing is for sure, Morris is going to bring a lot of offensive excitement back to Oklahoma State. Will he end up being a great head coach for the Cowboys? Nobody knows, but he still feels like a tremendous hire. How good Oklahoma State will be is going to be dependent on how much the program opens up to the modern NIL and Transfer Portal world. That will be key.

Now Morris just needs to find his next Cam Ward to make a splash in Stillwater. Perhaps that will be Mestemaker, who would have quite the demand if he enters the portal. It will be interesting to see how things turn out for Morris in a pretty difficult head coaching job.
