The Tennessee Vols had one of their worst halves of football in years on Saturday night, losing 45-24 to the Vanderbilt Commodores at Neyland Stadium in a game that was tied at half.

Tennessee was poor on both sides of the ball, in the second half in particular, but the Vols’ defense had their worst showing of the season by a country mile, allowing the Commodores to roll up 582 yards of offense.

And it might have punched Vanderbilt QB Diego Pavia’s ticket to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. And he and his teammates let Tennessee fans know about it late in the game with the result no longer in doubt.

Diego Pavia could give Vanderbilt their first Heisman Trophy winner before Tennessee achieves one

Pavia struck the pose after running 24 yards for a touchdown and a 38-24 lead with under 9 minutes left in the game. But Tennessee did absolutely nothing to that point of the game to keep him from doing that celebration. Don’t like it? Don’t let them do it. A cardinal rule in sports.

And now, Pavia should find himself in New York the Saturday following conference championship weekend for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. In all likelihood, he’ll be there with Ohio State QB Julian Sayin and Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza.

And if he takes home the hardware, it would be Vanderbilt’s first-ever winner of the sport’s highest individual honor. As Vol fans are painfully aware, Tennessee has had a number of finalists, most recently Peyton Manning in 1997, but have never been able to claim it.

It would be a gross sight for Vol fans and something that Vandy fans would never let them forget. And Tennessee would have no one to blame but themselves if it ends up happening.
