Brent Venables has already decided that he’s ready for whatever trick the College Football Playoff committee pulls next, as long as they’re in
Brent Venables and the Sooners will play anyone, anywhere.
Oklahoma Sooners head coach Brent Venables started his postgame press conference by reliving the journey of this season, from the last three seasons. And, he has already decided that he’s ready for whatever trick the College Football Playoff committee pulls next, as long as the Sooners are in the playoff.
Venables and the Sooners are ready for whatever comes next
“I don’t even know what that means. I just want an invitation,” Venables said regarding wanting to host a College Football Playoff game. “I don’t care if it’s on the road or here. I say that I don’t care, I’d love it if it were here. But wherever they ask us to play, we will show up.”
The discussion about whether this team deserves to host or not doesn’t really matter, if we are being honest. Sure, it would be amazing for Norman, Oklahoma, to host a playoff game. The town would go all out, and fans would do the same. But the Sooners don’t have a preference because they have been labeled “road warriors” a time or two this season.
This team doesn’t have a preference because they truly believe it doesn’t matter where they play. Oklahoma already won games against the Tennessee Volunteers and Alabama Crimson Tide on the road. South Carolina isn’t as good this year, but it still has a pretty good home-field advantage.
When they were at home, against tough opponents like the Missouri Tigers, Ole Miss Rebels, Auburn Tigers, Michigan Wolverines, and LSU, they won all but one, and that was a team ranked above them in the CFP rankings. So, this team really doesn’t have a preference. Sure, it comes off as coach speak, and sure, they’d like to be home. However, when Venables said they would be ready to play regardless, he actually meant that.
They could fall in the rankings based on what the committee saw on Saturday against LSU. That’s a game the committee is likely to think OU should have won handily. But it was extremely ugly. That could knock OU down, and it could end up being on the road in round one rather than hosting.
For now, all they can do is wait and see how things pan out.
