Auburn is hiring Alex Golesh as their new head coach and Vols fans are hoping he doesn’t swipe a key assistant coach from Tennessee
The Auburn Tigers are hiring former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh as their new head coach.
The Auburn Tigers are hiring former Tennessee Vols offensive coordinator Alex Golesh as their new head coach.
Golesh served as the head coach at USF for the last three seasons.
“I want to thank President Roberts and John Cohen for the opportunity to lead the Auburn program,” said Golesh in a statement. “Auburn Football is one of the proudest, most tradition-rich programs in all of college football and my family and I could not be more excited to join the Auburn Family. This will be a player-driven program, and no one will outwork our staff. Auburn has won, can win and will win championships. Let’s get to work.”
Vols fans are hoping Alex Golesh doesn’t swipe a key assistant coach from Tennessee
Tennessee is expected to have some defensive staff turnover this offseason after an up-and-down season in 2025.
One Vols assistant coach, however, that nearly every Tennessee fan hopes is back in 2026 is defensive line coach Rodney Garner.
Garner, who is viewed as one of the top defensive line coaches in football, has served on Tennessee’s coaching staff since 2021.
The longtime SEC assistant coach, though, could be a strong option to leave Rocky Top to join Golesh’s staff at Auburn.
Garner, who will turn 60 next summer, is a former Auburn football player. He’s also spent 14 total seasons of his coaching career as an assistant at Auburn (1990 to 1995 and 2013 to 2020). Considering his familiarity with Golesh, plus his obvious connections to the Tigers, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Garner emerges as an option to return to Auburn.
We’ll see how things shake out over the next couple of weeks. The craziness of this coaching cycle is far from over.
