There’s been so much coaching drama over the last few weeks and even the last month or two. The Florida Gators have been involved in some of that, along with the Ole Miss Rebels and LSU Tigers. Luckily, Florida got its guy in Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. They didn’t land Lane Kiffin, but they got a guy they think can be the next big thing.

They have Tulane to thank for that. They also have Tulane to thank for allowing Sumrall to do what Ole Miss wouldn’t allow Kiffin to do – gain valuable postseason coaching experience.

Tulane to allow Florida HC Jon Sumrall to coach conference title and playoff game

Tulane is one of the best Group of Five teams in the country. They are going to play in the American Conference Championship Game against North Texas, which is 11-1 on the year and one of the best offenses in the country, statistically. If Tulane wins that game, it may make the College Football Playoff, where Sumrall would also get to coach.

This is what Kiffin wanted to do with Ole Miss before heading to LSU, but the Rebels denied his request. For Ole Miss, that makes sense. They play in the same conference, and that could be one thing he uses to poach some of the players in Oxford before coaching his first season at LSU.

Tulane letting Sumrall do it makes sense for them, too. This is the only chance you get this year to do something special, and for all we know, they may never be back in this opposition. Sumrall is the main guy who got them there; taking him away could mess everything up with the team.

As for Florida, they should be thanking Tulane. This gives Sumrall, a fairly young and inexperienced head coach, the ability to coach a bit of postseason football. That’s invaluable in college football, and Florida realizes that could only help them in the future.
