LSU is already paying for stealing Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss, and he hasn’t even officially started yet
Lane Kiffin’s contract is a massive one for LSU, Ole Miss, and the entire college football world.
Contract details are sometimes one of the most intriguing pieces of the college football world. For Lane Kiffin, everyone knew his deal with LSU would include aspects that would make fans give it a double take. That’s been proven true, and the latest report about particular bonuses may be the most impressive for the coach and his agent.
Lane Kiffin will get paid by LSU based on Ole Miss’ success in College Football Playoff
According to Wilson Alexander, LSU agreed to pay Kiffin’s postseason bonuses tied to Ole Miss, even though he’s no longer coaching them. He can make up to $1 million if the Rebels win the national title this season. It is a massive long-term sign of trust in Kiffin and certainly helped the program lock up his services.
Kiffin’s overall deal is worth $91 million over seven years. He’s getting paid to be an elite coach, and LSU simply refused to get outbid here.
I discussed this sort of structuring with Ryan Roberts, who shared my sentiment on this part of the contract. It is a bold move by the Tigers, but they also made sure to remove any doubt that Kiffin would turn them down this year. That’s quite commendable.
“You have to give LSU a lot of credit. While it’s costing them an arm and a leg, they clearly knew who they wanted as their next head coach, and they went out and got him. With the contract set to pay the former Ole Miss coach $13 million per year, I’m not sure anyone expected Kiffin to be compensated for the College Football Playoff run he would miss by leaving Ole Miss.
“LSU clearly sweetened the deal, which is a good sign of faith, but they are allocating even more money to their new head coach. One thing is certain: they are fully invested, and Kiffin won’t be hurting for money anytime soon. Ole Miss told LSU to put its money where their mouth is, and it clearly took that seriously. It will be fascinating to see how this marriage between the Tigers and Kiffin works out, particularly when it gets out of this honeymoon stage.” — Ryan Roberts, A to Z Sports
We’ll see what happens with the Rebels in the postseason, as some of their offensive staff have already departed to join Kiffin in Baton Rouge. Meanwhile, former defensive coordinator Pete Golding is now the head coach, and the program announced that there’s no interim tag. It’s his job.
Regardless, Kiffin and LSU will have their eyes peeled on Ole Miss’ postseason performance in the coming weeks.
