Julian Sayin sends final message to the Michigan Wolverines after the Ohio State Buckeyes went on the road and handled them
Ohio State’s starting quarterback had three touchdown passes to help the Buckeyes end their losing streak against Michigan.
The Ohio State Buckeyes got the job done against the Michigan Wolverines for the first time since 2019 over the weekend. Ryan Day entered the game with an 81-10 record as head coach, but four of those losses had come against the Wolverines.
Ohio State controlled Saturday’s matchup for most of the afternoon after a slow start. The Buckeyes’ defense was stout throughout, and the offense overcame an early Julian Sayin interception that was uncharacteristic. Sayin bounced back and became the first Ohio State quarterback since Justin Fields to beat Michigan. C.J. Stroud, Kyle McCord, and Will Howard all came up short against the Wolverines during their time as starters.
Julian Sayin with one final message to Michigan
Sayin isn’t a man of many words and generally lets his play do the talking. His latest Instagram caption served as an indirect message to Michigan after securing the win:
“Appreciate the hospitality.”
Sayin performed very well after his early turnover, on a play where Michigan disguised its coverage on a pass intended for Jeremiah Smith. The Buckeyes’ starter finished 19-of-26 for 233 yards and three touchdowns with just the one interception. His first touchdown was a 35-yard go ball up the sideline to Smith, followed by a short slant to Brandon Inniss before halftime. Coming out of the break, Sayin helped put the game away with a 50-yard strike to Carnell Tate.
On the season, Sayin is up to 3,065 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and only five interceptions. The California native handled the environment in Ann Arbor well and added another strong moment to his Heisman résumé. He now has a chance to seize control of the Heisman race in the Big Ten Championship against the Indiana Hoosiers. Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza is likely his top competition, and whoever plays better could very well take home the award.
Sayin has been the starter for just 12 games, and he already owns a win over Michigan—something expected of any Ohio State quarterback. His toughest tests still lie ahead in the conference championship and the College Football Playoff, but if the first 12 games have shown anything, it’s that he’ll be ready for the challenge.
