Packers test a name you probably haven’t heard in ages as they explore creative options to address an unexpected new problem
Packers tried out six players on Tuesday, including interior defensive linemen Ross Blacklock and Isaiah Raikes.
The Green Bay Packers took advantage of the extra days of preparation ahead of the Chicago Bears to test some pieces. The front office called six players for workouts, and the positions indicate where they could add depth pieces over the next few weeks — interior of the defensive line, defensive backs, and offensive line.
The most notable name is one you shouldn’t have heard in a long time. Defensive tackle Ross Blacklock, a former second-round pick who’s already spent time in the NFC North with the Minnesota Vikings, was part of the process. The interior of the defensive line is a particularly interesting need now, after Devonte Wyatt got hurt — he’s out for the season with a low-leg fracture.
Players who tried out for the Packers on Tuesday
DT Ross Blacklock
A second-round pick in 2020 by the Houston Texans, Blacklock never developed as his pre-draft evaluation would indicate. He’s spent time with the Minnesota Vikings, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, Tennessee Titans, and New York Giants. While his play has never been good at the NFL level, especially against the run, he did have a decent season back in 2021, rushing the passer from the interior, with 25 total pressures for the Texans.
NT Isaiah Raikes
A rookie, Raikes played four college seasons at Texas A&M before transferring to Auburn for his final year of eligibility in 2024. In the NFL, he spent time with the Tennessee Titans, during which he recorded 23 preseason snaps and one pressure.
DB Omar Brown
Brown had a great training camp for the Packers this year and was the star of Family Night. However, a lung injury that head coach Matt LaFleur classified as a “scary deal” limited his season. It seems like he’s fully healthy now. Undrafted last year, he played for the Denver Broncos before signing with Green Bay. He spent parts of the 2024 season on the practice squad and was elevated for two games.
DB Mike Reid
Reid is a former South Dakota cornerback. The rookie had a solid preseason with the Seattle Seahawks, playing in all three games and recording 55 defensive snaps. He allowed a 79.2 passer rating when targeted, including one pass breakup.
OL Karsen Barnhart
While the Packers listed Barnhart as a tackle, he has more experience at guard in the NFL. He’s played for the Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but has yet to make a regular-season appearance. In preseason, he’s had 219 snaps at guard (on both sides of the line) and six at a sixth offensive lineman.
T Caleb Etienne
An undrafted rookie, Etienne was with the Cincinnati Bengals in training camp but was waived with an injury designation ahead of the final cuts. He played 72 offensive snaps in exhibition games, all of them at left tackle, allowing three pressures.
