Shedeur Sanders might be the starting QB for the Cleveland Browns right now, but that could soon change. Deshaun Watson’s 21-day practice window has opened following his Achilles tear and subsequent setback in recovery.

And while the Browns have gone the younger route for the majority of the season with rookies like Sanders and Dillon Gabrel, Brandon Little of A to Z Sports Cleveland says that’s about to change following this move from Cleveland.

Deshaun Watson could play in 2025 after having his practice window opened

“The Browns have had a full carousel at quarterback over the last couple of years, and now it could soon be Deshaun Watson’s turn again for a ride. Joe Flacco was handed the starting job to open the season, but he lasted just four games before Cleveland shipped him away. Dillon Gabriel got six starts before suffering a concussion, but he wasn’t playing well enough to keep the job either, which opened the door for Shedeur Sanders. Sanders has been very meh through his first two starts and hasn’t shown anything to make the Browns believe he can be the guy.

Watson is still under contract through the 2027 season, and the Browns opening his practice window means he’s going to suit up for at least a couple of weeks this season. From there, the Browns will have to decide whether they want him on the field over their rookies. Cleveland has two first-round picks next year, and it’s all but a lock that they’re going to take a quarterback. The Browns could very well be getting one final look at Watson post–Achilles injury this season before they ultimately decide to move on.” – Little

To me, this feels like a recipe for disaster. The Browns know what they have in Watson. He was borderline unplayable before the Achilles injury, and now he’s only older, less mobile, and will be even rustier mentally, which was a major problem when he returned to action after the blockbuster trade.

Oh, and don’t forget the negative publicity that comes with doing anything other than shelving Watson until the contract has withered enough to cut him, especially when you have a player like Sanders, who has shown some promise and brings enough intrigue and charisma to keep fans interested despite the season being all but over with a month to go.

Guess you could say it’s par for the course.
