The Dallas Cowboys take on the Detroit Lions tonight in a must-win matchup for both sides. Whichever side loses will take a massive hit to its playoff chances. So naturally, every single roster move deserves attention.

On Thursday, hours before the matchup, the Cowboys announced a roster move that could be a bad omen ahead of game time: They elevated DE Isaiah Land from the practice squad.

Let’s dive into what it means and why it’s a telling move.

Cowboys elevating DE Isaiah Land could be a bad sign for Jadeveon Clowney

Cowboys’ starting DE Jadeveon Clowney is questionable ahead of the game and is expected to be a game-time decision. Earlier in the week, head coach Brian Schottenheimer said Clowney deserved an opportunity to test his hamstring in warmups before a decision was made.

But clearly, the Cowboys are preparing for a game without Clowney. If Clowney can go, however, Land could still be a part of the team’s inactives. We’ll find out who is active ninety minutes before kickoff.

Land was recruited as an undrafted free agent back in 2023, largely by then-defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. He was later waived and spent a couple of years with the Indianapolis Colts. Land reunited with the Cowboys in 2025 and is now set to make his debut with the franchise.

The Cowboys enter Thursday’s game as 3.5-point road underdogs. Over the last couple of weeks, they’ve won back-to-back games as underdogs; however, it should be a fun one in Motor City.
