Chris Henry Jr. saga ends with the news that that the Ohio State Buckeyes needed after losing Brian Hartline
Brian Hartline’s exit had a chain reaction of sorts, but the Buckeyes just kept their most important recruit in the class.
The last few days have been a whirlwind for the Ohio State Buckeyes ahead of Saturday’s Big Ten Championship against the Indiana Hoosiers.
On Wednesday, the Buckeyes lost offensive coordinator Brian Hartline to his first head-coaching job at USF. As a result, Ohio State experienced some expected recruiting fallout. The Buckeyes lost four-star WR Kayden Dixon-Wyatt, and there has been significant doubt surrounding the future of five-star wideout Chris Henry Jr.
Chris Henry Jr. set to sign with Ohio State after all, choosing the Buckeyes over Oregon
Henry Jr. appeared on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday afternoon to announce where he would be signing to play college football. The five-star wide receiver from Mater Dei (CA) is sticking with his Ohio State commitment and will be signing to play in Columbus. It’s a major win for the Buckeyes and head coach Ryan Day following Hartline’s departure.
Ohio State has held Henry Jr.’s commitment since July 2023, and now he’s set to sign more than two years later. That’s an unusually long time to maintain a verbal commitment, and the Buckeyes went wire-to-wire with the No. 1 wide receiver in the 2026 class. The 6-foot-5 pass catcher — and son of the late NFL player Chris Henry — chose Ohio State over Oregon, though Texas and LSU also remained in the mix.
The Buckeyes will bring in four wideouts in the 2026 class, with Henry Jr. serving as the headliner. Four-star WR Jaeden Ricketts is the in-state addition, while four-star Jerquaden Guilford is a top-150 player from Indiana. The class is rounded out by three-star wideout Brock Boyd from Texas, a prospect the Buckeyes are particularly high on.
It didn’t look promising on Wednesday or Thursday regarding Ohio State’s chances of signing its top commitment. But Day and the Buckeyes kept battling to keep Henry Jr. in the class, and they succeeded in the end.
