Signing John Wolford to the active roster says a lot about how the Minnesota Vikings now see Max Brosmer.

It’s been a tough season for the Minnesota Vikings. They sit at 4-8, and the year’s biggest themes have been injuries and execution.

The one position that has fit both of those is quarterback. J.J. McCarthy has been the catalyst for those issues. He’s suffered a high ankle sprain, right hand injury, and a concussion so far this season, and he’s missed half of the Vikings’ games in 2025. Carson Wentz dealt with shoulder injury and inconsistency issues after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury, and Max Brosmer was just the latter last week against the Seattle Seahawks.

Minnesota Vikings make four roster moves, including at quarterback

The Minnesota Vikings made multiple roster moves on Saturday ahead of the game:

  • Signed quarterback John Wolford to the active roster
  • Elevated cornerback Dwight McGlothern and defensive tackle Taki Taimani to the active roster for Sunday’s game
  • Running back Ty Chandler was ruled out

It makes sense for both McGlothern and Taimani to be updated. The Vikings have just three cornerbacks on the active roster, and this is the third consecutive game where McGlothern will be elevated from the practice squad. Taimani also makes sense, as defensive tackle Levi Drake Rodriguez was ruled out with a neck injury.

The addition of Wolfold to the active roster sends an interesting signal about how the Vikings view their quarterback room. You can only have a third quarterback on gameday if they are on the active roster. With Brosmer playing so poorly on Sunday afternoon against the Seahawks, Wolford is likely going to be the backup quarterback against the Washington Commanders.

It shouldn’t be much of a surprise, as Brosmer looked like he was at least a year or two away from being a viable quarterback in the regular season.

The Vikings and Commanders kick off this Sunday at noon CT.
