Texas A&M Aggies get surprisingly ridiculous College Football Playoff draw as committee ignores key metrics
Texas A&M faces tough playoff path with Oregon and Ole Miss still ahead of them and early matchups against Miami and Ohio State Buckeyes coming
The Texas A&M Aggies knew they were likely going to get a bit screwed by the College Football Playoff committee when it came to their first and second round matchups after last week’s rankings show. The committee dropped A&M all the way down to the No. 7 seed, and that’s indeed where the Aggies landed in the final rankings.
Yes, Texas A&M lost to the Longhorns in a rivalry game to end the regular season, but the committee’s ignoring of key metrics now makes for a ridiculous path that Mike Elko and his Aggies will have to overcome.
Texas A&M set to face most difficult path in the College Football Playoff
It’s hard to argue that any team faces a more difficult or unfair path to the national championship game than its playoff seed suggests. The Aggies will have to kick things off by playing Miami (the 10-seed, somehow), who have been red hot over the past month, winning their last four in a row with an average score of 38-10.
Then, if the Aggies win, their reward is a second-round matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were ranked No. 1 all season long. After that, they would likely face off against Georgia in the semis. Just an absolutely wild gauntlet to overcome, as you can see in the College Football Playoff bracket post below.
How did Texas A&M end up with such a ridiculous playoff draw? The committee dropped them from a consensus top-three seed to seventh in the College Football Playoff rankings in just one week, after losing a tough rivalry matchup against Texas 27-17.
The Aggies still finished the season ranked above the Oregon Ducks and Ole Miss Rebels in strength of record, strength of schedule, and were virtually tied in game control — all metrics the committee is supposed to care about. Still, the Aggies ranked below both teams, earning one of the worst game draws and paths to the title game possible.
Had they been ranked fifth or sixth, their first round draw would be against a Group of Five conference team like Tulane or James Madison. Had they landed the five seed, they could have faced off against a lower-rated four-seed in Texas Tech, too. Marcel Reed and company will have their work cut out for them now that the committee has put them in a tough situation. Aggies fans just need to hope coach Elko can rekindle that midseason magic that had A&M looking unstoppable.
