After a clutch victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 14, the quarterback discussion is officially back for the New Orleans Saints. Tyler Shough played well and simply fought his way to leading his offense to a 24-point performance. His rushing upside was on full display as he scored twice on the ground.

Shough now has more wins in six starts than Spencer Rattler had in 14 with New Orleans. Tyrann Mathieu shared his perspective on the future for the Saints following the victory on social media as well.

Shough was 13/20 for 144 passing yards (with one interception) through the air. He also ran for 55 yards on seven attempts and the two aforementioned touchdowns. His maneuverability and relentless effort was on full display, and a former Saints fan favorite took notice.

“I DO NOT WANT TO GET AHEAD BUT THIS GUY CAN BALL! GIVE HIM THE KEYS AND LET HIM DO HIS THING !!” — Tyrann Mathieu via X/Twitter

“He showed me something today!!! His numbers won’t wow you but it’s the critical situation football he’s winning! This city should absolutely get behind him and embrace him as QB for next decade!! Get him some more weapons and a good defense! Saints aren’t far off from bouncing back and competing in this division!” — Mathieu via social media

Timely play making and third down conversions made all the difference for New Orleans. The offense made a lot of impactful plays in the second half, and their defense put Baker Mayfield and co. in a blender rather often when it mattered most. Rookie running back Devin Neal had a nice game for the Saints as well.

All in all, it is tough to already crown Shough as the long-term answer for the Saints at QB, but these sort of gritty performances have started to stack up. He plays with an experienced presence and has proven that he can adjust protections to keep himself upright behind a banged up offensive line.

Only time will tell if he’s the answer for New Orleans, but Tyrann Mathieu has a ton of faith in the rookie quarterback going forward.
