When the Michigan Wolverines fired head coach Sherrone Moore on Wednesday, many Tennessee Vols fans immediately turned their attention to running back Savion Hiter.

Hiter is ranked as the No. 1 running back in the 2026 recruiting class. He signed with Michigan last week after committing to the Wolverines in August.

According to ESPN, if a coach leaves after the early signing period, “players are granted their release without penalty.” So if Hiter decides he wants to leave Michigan — due to the uncertainty surrounding the Wolverines — it sounds like he would be free to do so.

Tennessee heavily pursued Hiter during the recruiting process, ultimately finishing as the runner-up. After missing out on Hiter, the Vols didn’t sign a running back in the 2026 recruiting cycle.

As rumors about Hiter spread on Thursday, the five-star running back took to his Instagram story to address the noise.

Hiter responded to a tweet claiming he had already asked for his release from Michigan by posting “just be lying” on his Instagram story.

Hiter could still ask for his release from Michigan at some point. I’m guessing, though, that he’ll wait to see who Michigan hires to replace Moore before making any big decisions about his future.

For now, it’s unclear who Michigan is planning to hire. There are rumors flying around about Alabama’s Kalen DeBoer, but those seem to be nothing more than rumors at this point.
