Few people expected to see the kind of season the Chicago Bears have had in 2025 and even fewer expected to see the impact cornerback Nahshon Wright would have for this team, and even some people inside the building were a little surprised.

When the Bears signed Wright back in April on a one-year, $1.1 million contract, the team was expecting to just add some familiar depth to the room given his history with defensive backs coach Al Harris. In reality, Wright went on to become a starter on the outside and currently ranks second at in position in Pro Bowl voting with four weeks left in the regular season.

“If you’re smart and you’ve got some talent and you’re willing to work, then I think us as coaches and the staff that Ben [Johnson] has put together, we can help you become a better football player, and I think he’s exactly that,” defensive coordinator Dennis Allen explained. “He’s smart, he’s got athletic ability, and he works extremely hard. When you put those three things together, you tend to improve.”

Improve he certainly did. Last season, Wright appeared in just one game with the Minnesota Vikings. This season, he took the opportunity in Chicago by the chains and never looked back. He found his true home with this team in this system, and made his future intentions crystal clear after 2025.

“I would like to be here, obviously, due to the fact that they’ve believed in me and I have Al (Harris) here, (Dennis Allen) who’s a great defensive coordinator, and Ben (Johnson) who’s doing a great job leading this team,” Wright said on 670 The Score. “Me and my agent have definitely had dialogue about it, but we haven’t heard anything yet.”

The Bears are certainly grateful to have a guy like Wright in the building and willing to step up for his team following countless injuries to the cornerback position involving Jaylon Johnson, Tyrique Stevenson, Kyler Gordon, Terell Smith, and others.

Few players could have stepped up and performed at that kind of high level and his breakout season has more than earned a steep pay raise after the 2025 season. But, I also can see Chicago’s point of view on the matter when it comes to making a long-term commitment with Wright.

The Bears currently have six other corners under contract for the 2026 season and have two highly-paid contracts already allocated to the position. Not mention the team is hoping for much better health and have high hopes for fifth-round rookie Zah Frazier, who missed his rookie season due to a personal matter.

Then, you have to factor in the entirety of Wright’s play and if it can be sustained.

The give and take with Nahshon Wright

As it stands going into Week 15, Wright leads the NFL in total takeaways and is second in the league in interceptions, trailing only his teammate Kevin Byard. He’s been very opportunistic attacking the football but has also been a highly targeted player that’s given up some big plays.

Among 89 cornerbacks with 250+ coverage snaps this season, Wright has allowed 515 yards (11th-most), seven touchdowns (T-most), and 39 receptions (15th-most).

It’s also worth noting the lack of production Wright had earlier in his career before this season (one interception in his first four seasons). While it’s true players can improve over time and in the right system, it’s still something the Bears will factor when considering a future contract and raise.

Personally, Wright has more than deserved a sizable deal and a raise after the 2025 season he had in Chicago. We’ll see if it’s the Bears who decide to make that decision, or if the Bears decide to let him hit the free agent market. It’s certainly a tough decision for the front office and staff to weigh.
