Ben Johnson’s promise regarding Caleb Williams is coming to fruition after another strong outing by the Bears’ young quarterback
Caleb Williams played an excellent game in Week 15.
The Chicago Bears knew they were knocking on the door of something special with quarterback Caleb Williams and it was a matter of time until everything fell together for the team’s young quarterback in head coach Ben Johnson’s offense.
“There’s certainly some [throws] that you can talk about each week where you feel like guys are open and we can certainly give them a ball on time and give them a chance to run after catch and all that. Then, there’s that mix of, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s one of the most incredible plays I’ve ever seen in my life’ type deal with him,” Johnson said of Williams last week.
“And that’s something we’re striving to do is combine both of those worlds to where we think we’re going to have a really good quarterback in this league, a really dangerous quarterback in this league, a really dangerous offense, a really good team for a long time when we’re really able to combine both of those thought processes…. when that last little bit comes along, I think we’re going to be really pleased with where we are.”
Caleb Williams is hitting his stride at the perfect time for the Bears
Sunday against the Cleveland Browns, things started to finally come together for Williams for all four quarters for the first time in weeks. The Bears started the game off with a disappointing three-and-out but then scored on back-to-back possessions to give Chicago an early lead.
In the second-half, Williams and the Bears’ offense stacked up 17 unanswered points and the unit was humming on all cylinders, including the passing game. During the third quarter, Williams made the most ridiculous play of his young career when he rolled out right and hit wide receiver DJ Moore on a “Hero Post” in the back of the end zone. It was one of those plays where you’re thinking “No, no, no. Wait, holy cow, how did he made that throw?”
“I would say 99% of the quarterbacks, you tell them don’t even waste your time looking back there and trying to make that throw,” Johnson explained. “There’s usually bad things that happen, and yet he’s got the ability to make that throw, and DJ made a heck of a play there right on the back line as well. That was one of those highlight moments there.”
When asked if that throw was an ill-advised decision, Williams had the best answer possible when talking with reporters after the game: “I can make any throw.”
That’s the kind of confidence the Bears need Williams to have down the final three game stretch and into a potential playoff opportunity. Everything is in front of this team and the team’s confidence in Williams is starting to be rewarded at the perfect time.
“Hopefully we can find a way to make it into the dance. I think he’ll be playing his best football when we earn that right,” Johnson said late in the week. “… I know good things are coming down the horizon. He’s going to continue to get better.”
Saying Williams continues to play at this kind of level and the rest of the team sustains the same level of consistency they’re playing with, the Bears are going to be a scary team to face in January.
