Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has officially undergone surgery to repair the tear in his left ACL.

This comes as Mahomes visited Dr. Dan Cooper in Dallas, Texas, for what Andy Reid claimed was a second opinion on his ACL tear. That second opinion revealed that Mahomes also suffered a torn LCL, according to reports from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. ESPN’s Nate Taylor has since confirmed the report. While he’s the foremost specialist in knee ligament injuries, the LCL is Dr. Cooper’s specialty. He’s performed numerous procedures for NFL athletes, including Chiefs WR Rashee Rice’s knee surgery just last season.

The Chiefs shared a message on X after Mahomes underwent surgery with Dr. Cooper.

“Injury Update on QB Patrick Mahomes: Patrick Mahomes successfully underwent surgery in Dallas this evening with Dr. Dan Cooper to repair the tear in his left ACL. Mahomes will begin his rehab process immediately.”

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ recovery timeline revealed

The presence of LCL injury in addition to an ACL injury often adds a layer of complexity. Still, it doesn’t necessarily mean Mahomes will face a much longer injury recovery timeline. My understanding is that the 8-12 month timeline is still very much on the table for Mahomes, who is slated to begin rehab and recovery immediately.

The key from here on out is to avoid swelling and overexertion as we slowly march toward the 2026 NFL season. Mahomes is known for his aggressive rehab work, but he’s going to have to tread carefully here.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid said earlier today that he doesn’t know if Mahomes will be ready for Week 1, but expects him to recover from the injury fairly quickly.

“Yeah, we’ll cross that as we go,” Reid told reporters. “Brett (Veach) thinks of everything. I mean, he jumps in on it, and he’s well ahead of all of it. So, I’m not worried about it, that part of it. And then Pat (Mahomes), you never know on these rehabs how they go. I just know he’s got good people that he’ll be working with, and I know how aggressive he is on things. And you know, as long as the surgery goes well and as expected, then I would expect a fairly quick recovery for him just because of those factors.”

For now, it’s all about taking things one day at a time and looking to the future for No. 15.
