The Detroit Lions lost a game on Sunday, and that sucks. Let’s answer some questions.

Who will be the Lions’ next offensive coordinator?

Let’s start here. Kelvin Sheppard isn’t going anywhere unless he’s hired as a head coach. He’s done a pretty good job, considering some of the tools he’s had to do it with. As for the OC job, I have a personal favorite for the gig if the Lions move on from John Morton.

For me, it’s Bills quarterback coach Ronald Curry. Curry has a history with Campbell, dating back to their four seasons together in New Orleans. Curry has been climbing the NFL coaching ladder for some time now. He’s been a quarterbacks coach, receivers coach, and a passing game coordinator.

He’s received some offensive coordinator interviews around the league, but hasn’t nailed down a gig just yet. The Lions could be that gig. This would be a return to Detroit for Curry. He was on the Lions’ training camp roster in 2009.

How can the Lions’ defense hold up if they get some guys back from injuries?

I’d feel a lot better if Amik Robertson and Thomas Harper were healthy. Harper has played pretty well this year, and he’d be a big upgrade over Erik Hallett. Of course, you’d feel even better if the Lions could get Kerby Joseph out there, too.

If the Lions can get all three of those guys back, and the offense keeps putting up points and gets the run game going, I believe this team is capable of winning out. Without that, we’ll see you in Mobile for Senior Bowl coverage in January.

Why do the Lions keep underutilizing David Montgomery?

For the record, no, I don’t think his Instagram post has anything to do with him being frustrated or anything like that. He said, “Stay the course.” Staying the course is playing here for two more seasons.

The reason the Lions keep favoring Jahmyr Gibbs is that their offense is unstoppable when Gibbs can run the ball. This guy puts up big chunk-yard plays and scores a ton. Montgomery has his value, but the offense doesn’t move that way with him in there. You have to ride the hot hand. I do think he should have gotten some more carries against the Rams in the second half, though.

Why do the Lions keep getting hurt on defense?

I wish there was something I could blame. I wish it were the turf, or the scheme, or the practices. It’s just plain bad luck, and that’s it. Nobody wants to hear that because it’s not a physical thing or person you can point to, but it is what it is.

The Lions have invested heavily in their training staff, they changed the turf, and they’re practicing the right way. Guys just keep getting hurt. You hope that it will eventually end someday. I don’t know what else they can do.

How high can the Lions get in the 2026 NFL Draft?

How much of a difference in draft spots would winning out vs losing out, make?

I talked about this a bit on Monday, and they’re kind of just locked into the zone they’re in now. The 16-17 range. Even if they lose out, there will still be teams worse than them. The highest I could get them was 14, and that required a lot of things that are never going to happen.
