Steelers’ energetic win over the Dolphins doesn’t come without concern following a pair of injuries to key starters
Here is the latest injury update after the Steelers win over the Dolphins.
For the first time all season, the Pittsburgh Steelers played a complete game on both sides of the football. Sure, the Miami Dolphins scored a couple of garbage-time touchdowns, but the offense was firing on all cylinders, and the defense held Miami to less than 100 yards on the ground while keeping a lid on Tua Tagovailoa and the passing game in what was a must-win contest for the Dolphins.
That was done without two of the team’s most important starters, Derrick Harmon and T.J. Watt, by the way. But something that may have flown under the radar was an injury to the man who replaced Watt, as well as one to arguably the team’s best lineman.
Nick Herbig injures hamstring vs. Dolphins
It’s unclear when exactly Nick Herbig injured his hamstring, and the severity is still unknown, as Mike Tomlin simply said the team will be evaluating him in his postgame presser, via the Steelers YouTube. This has been one of the few downsides of Herbig.
Herbig’s elite get-off, burst, and bend rely on his fast-twitch muscle fibers, which can be easily compromised by soft-tissue injuries like hamstrings, something Herbig has dealt with in the past.
If Herbig’s injury is bad enough that he has to miss the Lions game, it could mean rookie Jack Sawyer makes his first career NFL start, should Watt still be in rehab following his partially collapsed lung.
Herbig wasn’t the only big injury on Monday night, however.
Isaac Seumalo injures tricep vs. Dolphins
Isaac Seumalo was seen going down later in the game on Monday, quickly being ruled from questionable, to doubtful, to out with his tricep injury. Given where the score was when he went down, perhaps the Steelers were just playing it safe, though Tomlin didn’t say whether that affected their decision-making.
Seumalo has missed time this year with a pec injury, and his absence significantly limits what the Steelers can do on offense. Spencer Anderson would be asked to fill in for Seumalo, which takes away from what the offense can do with its jumbo personnel.
We should receive more details when Tomlin speaks on Tuesday.
