Brian Hartline set to hire former Ohio State Buckeyes coach to his staff at South Florida in a major role
Brian Hartline makes a big move at South Florida ahead of the College Football Playoff.
The Ohio State Buckeyes suffered a big loss a couple of weeks ago when offensive coordinator Brian Hartline decided to move on to his first head coaching job at South Florida.
Hartline will remain with Ohio State through their College Football Playoff, and then it’s on to running his own program at USF. Hartline was introduced at South Florida last week and has begun putting together his coaching staff. The latest addition to Hartline’s staff is a former Buckeyes coach.
Brian Hartline makes a notable hire at South Florida with a former Buckeye
Hartline’s offensive coordinator at USF is set to be former Ohio State co-offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Tim Beck, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. Beck was with Ohio State during the 2015 and 2016 seasons under then-head coach Urban Meyer. At this time, it is unclear whether Hartline or Beck will call plays for South Florida.
Beck has spent the past three seasons as head coach at Coastal Carolina. Before that, the 59-year-old Youngstown, Ohio native spent three seasons at NC State as the offensive coordinator. After spending the 2015 and 2016 seasons in Columbus, Beck joined Tom Herman’s staff with the Texas Longhorns. Beck was eventually demoted from OC to quarterbacks coach with Texas before joining NC State.
Assembling a staff is one of Hartline’s biggest tasks, given that it’s his first time as a head coach. The transfer portal will open in early January when the Buckeyes plan to be playing still. That will be another point that Hartline will need to be heavily involved in at the USF jobs and juggling both roles.
Ohio State’s last time out was a 13-10 showing against Indiana that resulted in a loss, and it’s key for Hartline to leave on a better note. In the meantime, Hartline is making way on his first coaching staff.
