Two weeks ago, Pittsburgh Steelers fans booed Renegade and chanted “Fire Tomlin.” Talks of finally moving on from Coach T and blowing it all up after the season started to take over both local and national storylines.

Ever since, the Steelers have won two games against the Baltimore Ravens and Miami Dolphins, and they sit atop the AFC North with multiple playoff clinching scenarios in the coming weeks. That has some, including Penn State legend and current Fox Sports radio host LaVar Arrington, asking, “Why not Pittsburgh?”

LaVar Arrington believes Steelers are among Super Bowl contenders

“I could come from those games and definitely say that the Steelers would be that type of team that could make a run for it,” said Arrington on 2 Pros and a Cup of Joe YouTube channel. “When I stopped and really thought about it there’s no dominant teams in the National Football League.”

“I think if if Pittsburgh is able to continue to solidify what they’re doing right now and finding themselves with a physical brand of football that Pittsburgh plays and that’s what they live in and that’s what they had success in, I think they’re actually equipped to be a saw off deterrent in the playoffs.”

Should the Steelers be viewed as true Super Bowl contenders?

The obvious question is: are the Steelers true Super Bowl contenders? The answer is not as black and white as yes or no in my opinion. If Aaron Rodgers plays the way he did the last two weeks, T.J. Watt returns from his collapsed lung, and Derrick Harmon gets back to be that run-stuffing force off his knee injury, than yes, the Steelers can compete with anybody.

But that’s a lot of ifs. There is a lot of potential for things to go right. The problem is, we saw the Buffalo Bills come into Acrisure Stadium and set a rushing record. We saw the team looking lifeless and out of sorts against the Los Angeles Chargers, and the team still has two big tests against the Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens with a Cleveland Browns game in between.

So the verdict is wait and see. There is a lot to like about Monday night’s win, but it also came against a Dolphins team that is out of playoff contention and just benched their quarterback. The real test and final determination on what the Steelers are will happen the last three weeks.
