Ohio State Buckeyes suffer their first loss to the transfer portal ahead of beginning their run in the College Football Playoff
Ohio State has lost a wideout to the transfer portal, and it doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
The NCAA Transfer Portal doesn’t open until Jan. 2, but players are already starting to make their intentions known.
The Ohio State Buckeyes don’t begin their run in the College Football Playoff until Dec. 31, when they play the winner of Texas A&M and Miami. Just under two weeks ahead of Ohio State playing its first CFP game, one player has made it clear he will enter the portal.
Ohio State WR Bryson Rodgers will be entering the transfer portal
According to On3’s Hayes Fawcett, Ohio State WR Bryson Rodgers will be entering the transfer portal. This isn’t a real surprise for the Buckeyes, as Rodgers has gotten much playing time in three years with the program. Rodgers has six catches for 79 receiving yards and a touchdown in seven games played this season.
Rodgers has appeared in 20 games for the Buckeyes since he was a four-star recruit from Florida in the class of 2023. Rodgers is a 6-2 wideout who possesses good speed, and that was one area where he could potentially make an impact this season. There hasn’t been a whole lot of opportunity for Rodgers playing behind Jeremiah Smith, Carnell Tate, and Brandon Inniss as the starting wideouts.
Even next year, there isn’t a clear route to playing time for Rodgers. Tate is the only wideout in the rotation set to leave for the NFL, and the Buckeyes will bring in five-star WR Chris Henry Jr. as a true freshman. Quincy Porter and Mylan Graham are two players already on the roster who will also compete for playing time.
Rodgers can’t even officially enter the portal until Jan. 2, and then it’ll be interesting to see if he heads to South Florida with Brian Hartline. With Rodgers being from the Tampa Bay Area, a return home does make sense in more than one way. Expect Rosgers to be with the team on Dec. 31 as Ohio State begins the CFP, since the portal won’t be open quite yet.
