Saints gift full-time job to young player after he’s proven himself immediately to help them win
Charlie Smyth is already a beloved member of the team.
The New Orleans Saints are making a move that will make fans rather happy when it comes to the future on special teams. They’ve agreed to a long-term contract with their new kicker, who brings quite a unique story to New Orleans and the entire NFL.
Saints sign kicker Charlie Smyth to long-term contract after recent success
According to the Saints, the team has signed kicker Charlie Smyth to a three-year deal. He joins the active roster for a permanent stint after some movement between the game day group and the practice squad in recent weeks.
Smyth has impressed the Saints and their fans so far in his short time starting for the team, though. The young boot is 4/5 on field goal attempts this season. He also has a successful onside kick attempt which is even more rare in today’s NFL.
His first career field goal was a 56-yard make. That is tied for the second-longest made FG on a first attempt in league history. Smyth also nailed a game-winning 47-yard attempts with two seconds remaining against the Carolina Panthers in Week 15.
“Prior to joining the Saints, Smith was previously a goalkeeper for Down GAA (Gaelic Athletic Association) in Gaelic football and was selected by the NFL to participate in its International Player Pathway (IPP) program. The 24-year old Smyth, who started playing Gaelic football as a four year old, is an Ulster-under 20 winner who made his senior debut in 2023 in Ireland’s elite inter-county league.” — New Orleans Saints team website
Smyth’s effort and exuberance has been crystal clear for the organization, and they are correctly rewarding him. He stuck around on the practice squad for quite some time since last season, and now, it looks like the young kicker will be in the fold for seasons to come in New Orleans.
